Response to Intervention

Response to intervention (RtI) involves both our general and special education staff, along with GRPS Staff and our Christian Learning Center psychologist. RtI is the framework for delivering support to students and includes many of the theories and practices that WSCS has used for years. This framework allows for these services to be offered in a more formal process.

West Side uses the RtI process to determine the range of learners in our classrooms. We use this process to identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes in literacy and math, to provide evidence-based interventions and monitor student progress, and to more quickly pinpoint learning or other disabilities. It is also a helpful tool as we work to differentiate instruction for all students, including those who meet/exceed standards.

We are confident that this screening process and instructional delivery will continue to help all students reach their God-given potential at WSCS related to their academic success. If you have further questions regarding the RtI process at WSCS, please feel free to contact your child's teacher or Julie Louwerse, RtI Coordinator.

3 Parts of the RTI Process

Universal Screening
All students in grades K-5 will be screened three times per year in early literacy or reading fluency and comprehension and all K-8th students will be screened in early numeracy or math computation and application. WSCS uses the assessment system, AIMSweb, for this screening. Universal screening allows staff to track how students are doing in comparison to grade-level expectations. Screening results will be sent home to parents soon after the testing is completed.
Analyze Assessment Data
Using the AIMSweb results, we examine if students are performing to benchmark standards and if not, curriculum and instructional adjustments are made at the classroom level and beyond, if needed. Monthly collaborative meetings between classroom teachers and the RtI Coordinator (and other support staff as needed) give opportunity to review student performance and discuss appropriate interventions.
Progress Monitor
Ongoing assessment and observation will take place to determine whether the interventions used are successful or whether further support is needed.

Our Mission

To provide a quality Christ-centered education that teaches children of the West Side Christian community about every aspect of God's creation from a Reformed Christian perspective in a distinctly Christian environment, preparing them spiritually and academically to live as Christ's servants.
